so Nate made my day when he sent me an email that basically said "i'm getting bored with my CDs. send me more!"

i just got off the phone with him, and i've worked out a list of 28 CDs i can make for him. in a few days he's going to email me his edited-down list, which will probably be around 15 CDs.

so. much. FUN! i love doin' this stuff for people, oh yeah!

putting together the compilation will be especially sweet. i'ma work on that right now, i am.

    Calculus Hilarity
well, since we're talking about comics...

today in Honors Calculus, i was preparing them for a derivative quiz they're taking tomorrow. so i tossed up on the board an all-encompassing function. it included EVERYTHING they needed to know about taking derivatives: trig function, natural log, an exponential, the Power Rule, Product Rule, Sum / Difference Rule, Quotient Rule (lo-deehi, hi-deelo!), Chain Rule, Constant Rule, Constant Multiple Rule, Kitchen Sink Rule. so i said "go ahead, try deriving that mess!" and one of the kids, Bray, said "i bet it's 3. is it 3?" i said..."no".

    into the hole!Collapse )

    Calvin and Hobbes
as I was wasting time on the internet today, i stumbled across a youtube video of a Robot Chicken parody of Calvin and Hobbes. it was not easy to watch, and...though i usually enjoy Robot Chicken, that one wasn't particularly funny to me. the sketch basically has Calvin sent to a psychiatrist, and eventually committed, a bumbling lunatic, because he believes Hobbes is real. an easy place to go if you're Robot Chicken. but yeah. i didn't like it at all.

this is easily my favorite comic strip of all time. it's one of the few things, along with the likes of Dave Barry, The Who, and The Penguins, to name a few, that my entire family really loves. i enjoyed reading it as a kid, even when there were times i never even understood everything Calvin was saying. he's very intelligent, with an incredible vocabulary, and of course, very imaginitive. we all know that...and there's just so much to love about the whole strip. take heed...

-he turned a box into a Transmogrifier, or a Time Machine, or a Duplicator (i especially loved that storyline).

-tfor years i've been creating Spaceman Spiff as a high-flying offensive defenseman in my video hockey games. no space explorer has gone further, or gotten himself out of more jams. and his space-glasses are top-notch! Spiff, indeed.

-actually, he's probably imagined himself as every conceivable oddity on the planet, from the microscopic Calvinfly to the enormous Calvinosaurus.

-one word: Calvinball. i've always wanted to take a stab at that game myself. I can still sing the "I'm sorry song" to this day.

-the awesome club meetings of G.R.O.S.S. (Get Rid Of Slimy girlS).

-have you ever wondered what actually transpired during the infamous "Noodle Incident?" Ann and I have been wondering about that for years.

and that's only scratching the tip of the iceberg. i'm really not doing the comic much justice.

i literally shed a few tears when i read the last comic for the first time. even now it still moves me, and i've decided to make it my desktop image for a while. just the whole idea of infinite possibilities, a blank slate, everything's so fresh and new. i absolutely love that it ended on a winter scene. can you think of nothing better than a cold crisp sunny day with snow everywhere and just a sled and your best friend at your disposal? yes, the ending of Calvin and Hobbes is the best ending to anyhting ever.

just think: somewhere out there, those two are still going on adventures, arguing, inventing, imagining, and getting into trouble.

thank you, Bill Watterson. you made my "Awesome" list a long time ago.

    "Let's Go Exploring". indeed.

i feel dizzy. in the "gah! what should i be working on now?" sense of dizzy. i'm sure the lot of you have experienced this feeling.

it's not so bad, i suppose. i did get a lot done, but i have so much more to do yet. my halloween will be filled with running errands and such. i'm writing this, so i can remember it all. i'ma tell the kids i can't stay after tomorrow, then hurry home.

have Rick sign more of those discount forms.

rent is due. end of the month, yo.

run to staples to fax my registration for winterim and spring semesters. gonna be BUSY come jan - april.

run to the post office to mail some things.

go to Gloria's for Halloweenie goodness.

return and write a paper for Wednesday's class.

and NONE of that encompasses any of my teaching duties.

i want to write about more things, but...that will happen later.

    how's Adam doing?
    well...

i suppose life is okay. it's as okay as it's going to be around here these days, anyways. i've had things going on that keep me busy. i've established new routines this year, which is a good thing.

the beginning of the week is always busy, since i have my classes. well...class, as it is right now. we just had our last Methods class the other day, so my monday nights are free again. this gives me more time to prepare for my Human Learning class on Wednesdays.

i like that class, especially since fellow SMR teacher Valentina is in there. she's become a buddy lately. we sit next to each other in class, and after class i join her and her roommate Stacey at Applebee's for a drink and appetizers. we're all teachers, and so we talk about teaching pretty much the entire time. i have a hard time envisioning myself become "close" to these people, but they're good people to talk to and hang with, and it's good times.

and on Thursday nights, of course, I go to Gloria and Mike's place for TV night, which is always fun. Mike had me cracking up tonight. he and Gloria bought all this Halloween stuff, including various flavors of Halloween Pop (by Jones sodas). one of the flavors was "Candy Corn Soda" which...sounded disgusting. but when Mike challenged me to a "Candy Corn Soda Drinking Contest", the concept sounded so hilariously ridiculous to me, i could NOT stop laughing! and thus, i HAD to accept the challenge. i lost horribly. and that drink was awful. now i never have to drink it again.

the weekends i'm always doing something. tomorrow, i go home. next week, BNL concert with Omar. hooray! after that, who knows? i'm supposed to see philmach sometime in the near future, i -do- know that much.

our first hockey practice is on Sunday, which means I'll be rushing back to take part in it. we'll be practicing every Sunday and Thursday (though it's early enough that it won't get in the way of TV night. whew!), so that will also keep me quite busy in the coming weeks. also, the Pens are doing well, so i've been pleased with that. though i'm still mad that they were -terrible- when Ann and I went to see them a couple weeks ago.

another good thing is that i talk to Mike on the phone about once a week. our conversations are unmatched. we actually discovered something about the way we talk to each other, and the way other people tend to talk, and...well, we had a good discussion on the matter. i'll elaborate later. i have other entries i want to write that i'll get to later as well. for now, it's almost bed time.

yeah, i guess i'm doing all right. nothing fantastic, i've been happier, of course, but...meh. doin' all right. *shrug*

first. "The Edge" sort of surprised me. it's the first time i wrote something where I didn't have the music first. it was actually the second verse of the song that wound up writing first...those words just came to me. wrote them all down, and suddenly i was able to hear what i wanted it to sound like. i jotted down some notes, thought about it more, and wrote the rest of the verses and the refrain the following day. it wasn't until Friday evening when I finally worked out the music part. i still feel like there's something missing to it, but...maybe it's supposed to sound that way...

in other news, i have LOTS to do tomorrow. for my class Monday, i need to write the final two "mock" lesson plans in my unit, put together a teaching portfolio, and prepare a creative, 2-minute report on this book they had us read. i'm done with only some of this.

i also have to prepare some REAL lesson plans for the week, and write another paper for Wednesday's class. the thing is, that paper would fit in well with my portfolio, so if i can get that done tomorrow...or at least mostly done, to the pont where it'd look good in said portfolio, then okay.

i also need to go to the store.

today i rearranged the furniture in my apartment. i really like how it looks now. my computer is now back in my bedroom, the old desktop is in the living room, the TV's away from the window now, and the whole living room is opened up a lot more. all my music stuff is back here too. i also made my "random stuff" collection look a lot better. perhaps i'll post some pictures soon.

    The Edge

    The mistakes that we make
All the chances that we take
    Get your priorities straight
    There's no time to hesitate

    Silent bells, flashing red
    Tiny buzzer in your head
When it's time to make that choice
    Don't ignore that little voice

It's everything I see and hear and think
    High up on this ledge
I know that I've been treading on the brink
Just too close to the edge

From the soul of a friend
To a heart on the mend
    All these feelings deep inside
Take their toll on the mind

It's the sense that something's wrong
A missing note in a familiar song
    Flickering light, raging storm
A bit too cold, a bit too warm

It's everything I think and see and hear
    High up on this ledge
I know since I have little left to fear
I'm too close to the edge

    It's when you can't hear a sound
    And nothing can be found
It's when you've lost your place
    You're just staring into space

It's when you slam into a wall
    Or take a nasty fall
    You may get burned
    What have you learned?

All worn out, short of breath
It's that Blue Screen of Death
    Spoiled milk, moldy bread
And you're hanging by a thread

It's the sense that something's wrong
A missing note in a familiar song
When it's time to make that choice
    Never ignore that little voice

It's everything I hear and think and see
    High up on this ledge
I know that I would rather not be
    This close to the edge.

I'm too close to the edge.

the nature of this young life is generally very confusing. i can't figure out what the deal is, other than little sleep and lots to do, especially in the next week or so.

journeys to familiar places proved to be bittersweet. the faces were nice, the $55 was quite a waste. where's the effort? i think my shirt is possibly cursed. i need to find a way to cleanse it of its taintedness.

the brain is weary, but it must press on. so much to do. this is such a slow process. i'll have what they're having, please! at least the Big Guy finally knows. now there's something else we can talk about.

stuck in a time that could definitely be improved. my memory and time itself are relatively unkind. i read about Chaos this past summer. now, in the fall, and we all seem to be experiencing it. Hex was a good representation. i almost forgot about all that, but i know i never really will. but it -has- been a while.

seeking clarity, stability, distraction. something like that. slow goings now, it will pick up i'm sure. just gotta watch out for the traps. i foresee blurriness for a whle.

my head cannot carry on like this. nap time, i think.

three things I must share with thee
    One: Rating Numbers

not bad. i get stuck looking at all the things on that wobsite sometimes. he rates many random things, it's great! another neat idea i wish i had thought of myself, but mostly am glad i didn't.

    Two: Satan on Weddings

A few weeks ago I was at Gloria's Thursday night TV gathering, as usual. We were messing around on the internet and happened across this. Gloria tried to read it in her best Satan voice, but it just wasn't happening, so I took over. It was very amusing. Sort of reminded me of when we were reading the bookmarks using the Warcraft 2 Narrator voice.

    Threeeeee!: Ballad of Gordon PSA

Yes! It's the original! I -do- remember seeing this on Saturday morning cartoons many times over, when I was about 11 or so. I especially remember the drawing of all the aliens near the end.

Man, those guys always have so much fun. I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

oh yeah. wrote this last night.
    The Beacon

Way off in the distance there's the sound like beating drums
    Here it comes
    The unsuspecting town is surrounded
    There's nowhere else to run

It's sweeping through the forests and the rivers and the hills
And anyone who comes too close gets shivers from its chills
One poor soul just happened to catch a glimpse with his naked eye
And all he could do was drop to his knees and shout out to the sky
    "Tell me why!"

"Everything was looking up and now it's coming back down
They won't know what to do to turn it around
It's going to tear this place back to the ground
I guess I should have never come to this town."

"Why is no one running? Shouldn't they at least get inside?
Don't they know it's coming? They may still have a chance if they hide."

"It's getting even closer now, can't they hear it scream?
It's like nothing I've ever heard before, not even in a terrible dream."

But no one else could hear it as its shrieking pierced the sky.
And nobody would listen when the poor soul began to cry.
    "Tell me why!"

"Everything was looking up, now it's coming back down.
And they don't know what to do to turn it around.
There's nowhere else to go. They're going to drown.
And soon there won't be anything left of this town."

Way off in the distance there's the sound of a hundred crows
    There it goes.
And now there stands a town, but no one can be found
    No one knows

Empty are the houses and the churches and the stores
And gone are all the families with children doing their chores
And also gone is the one poor soul who caught glimpse with his naked eye
But sometimes when the wind blows you can still hear his wretched cry
    "Tell me why!"

"Everything was looking up, and now it came back down
They didn't know what to do and now there's no one around
I guess I never should have come to this town
It was only a matter of time before I was found."
